What is a PTA Test and Why Do We Perform It?

PTA (Pure Tone Audiometry) is one of the most common and accurate methods to assess the degree and type of hearing loss. In this test, your hearing thresholds are measured across different frequencies (from low to high) using headphones and pure tones.

What Happens During a PTA Test?

  • You sit in an acoustic booth

  • Headphones are placed on your ears

  • Sounds of varying frequencies and intensities are played in each ear

  • You respond by raising your hand or pressing a button whenever you hear a sound

Objectives of PTA:
🔹 Measure hearing thresholds in speech frequencies
🔹 Determine the type of hearing loss (sensorineural, conductive, or mixed)
🔹 Assist in selecting the most suitable rehabilitation method (e.g., hearing aids)
🔹 Monitor hearing in individuals exposed to noise or ototoxic medications
🔹 Evaluate hearing before prescribing hearing aids or cochlear implants

Who Should Have a PTA Test?
✔ Individuals with hearing complaints, tinnitus, or speech comprehension issues
✔ Workers in noisy industries
Elderly people, children suspected of speech delay
✔ Individuals with a history of ear infections or head trauma

PTA testing is the first step in accurately understanding your hearing status.
