Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is one of the most common types of hearing loss. It usually develops gradually, but its effects are permanent.
What Causes It?
Loud sounds, especially if continuous or sudden, can damage the delicate hair cells in the cochlea. This damage is irreversible.
Common Sources of Harmful Noise:
🔹 Headphones at high volume for long durations
🔹 Noisy work environments (factories, carpentry, heavy machinery)
🔹 Gunfire, explosions, fireworks
🔹 Loud concerts or events
🔹 Motorcycles or noisy vehicles without ear protection
Symptoms:
🔸 Tinnitus (ringing in the ear) after noise exposure
🔸 Sudden or gradual hearing loss
🔸 Difficulty understanding speech in groups or noisy environments
🔸 Feeling of “fullness” in the ear
✅ Prevention is Easier than Treatment:
✔ Use ear protection in noisy environments
✔ Limit headphone usage duration
✔ Keep device volume below 60%
✔ Maintain distance from the noise source
✔ Regular hearing screenings for at-risk individuals
Noise-induced hearing loss is preventable but irreversible.
